1974 Southwest Conference Championship Panelists:

Ricky Thompson (BBA '77)

A two-sport standout at Baylor, Thompson swept the Southwest Conference indoor and outdoor championships in the long jump in 1975 and 1976, becoming the second athlete in program history to surpass 25 feet and earning All-America honors as a senior. On the gridiron, Thompson was a talented receiver who caught a 54-yard touchdown pass in the win over Texas and led the team the next season with 27 catches for 425 yards and two touchdowns. Selected in the eighth round of the 1976 NFL Draft by the Baltimore Colts, Thompson had a seven-year career with the Colts, Washington Redskins, and St. Louis Cardinals, recording 97 catches for 1,480 yards and 14 touchdowns. Inducted into the Baylor Hall of Fame in 1992, Thompson is now in his 25th season as a sideline reporter for the Baylor football radio broadcast team.

Phillip Kent (BSED '75)

Named to Baylor’s All-Decade Team of the 1970s, Kent earned All-Southwest Conference honors as a senior in 1974, leading the team with 24 catches for 406 yards and two touchdowns. He was also named Co-MVP of the SWC championship team and played in the Coaches’ All-America game with Baylor teammates Neal Jeffrey and Derrel Luce. A seventh-round draft pick by the Miami Dolphins in 1975, Kent was inducted into the Baylor Hall of Fame in 1987, holding the distinction of being the first African American to receive the honor. The former Baylor regent serves as Pastor Emeritus at The Cathedral of Life church in Houston and returned to Waco in 2021 as a Baylor Legend. His son, Phillip Kent Jr., was a linebacker for the Bears from 1992 to 1995.

David “Bubba” Hicks (BBA '75)

A Waco native, Hicks was selected to Baylor football’s All-Decade Team of the 1970s and received honorable mention on the All-Floyd Casey Stadium Team for the stadium's 64-year history. In the 34-24 win over Texas in 1974, Hicks secured the victory with a pair of late field goals, including one in the final minute of the game. His 14 field goals made as a senior in 1975 set a school record and still rank in the top 10 all-time. Hicks also holds the program record for the longest field goal, a 60-yarder in the 1975 season finale versus Rice. A well-respected banker in his hometown, Hicks retired as President and CEO of American Bank in 2023.

Johnny Greene (BA '77)

Other than Jairon McVea’s goal-line stop in the 2021 Big 12 Championship Game, Greene made arguably the biggest play in the history of Baylor football. With the Bears trailing the 12th-ranked Texas Longhorns 24-7 at halftime, the sophomore defensive back blocked a punt by Mike Dean on the first series of the third quarter, which was recovered by linebacker Johnny Slaughter at the UT 17-yard line. This set up a one-yard touchdown run by quarterback Neal Jeffrey and sparked a 27-point second half that led to a 34-24 win. Greene was a three-year letterman for the Bears (1973-75). After earning his DDS from Baylor College of Dentistry in 1980, he has been a dentist in Mt. Pleasant and currently serves as the pastor at Grace Baptist Church.
