About Our Legend
One of just five people named to both the Baylor Athletics Hall of Fame and Wall of Honor, Jim Turner (BBA '69) was a three-year basketball letterman at Baylor (1966-68) who scored a freshman-record 63 points in a game against Temple College in 1965.
It's an unofficial record, because it wasn't in a varsity game, but it was also before the three-point line was added. "I would shoot from way outside, so I suppose I was way ahead of my time," Turner said.
His best year came as a junior, when Turner finished second in the Big 12 in scoring with 20.9 points per game and earned first-team All-Southwest Conference and second-team All-District honors. Inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1996 and added to the Wall of Honor in 2008, Turner helped the Bears to back-to-back runner-up finishes in his final two seasons.
Owner, chairman and CEO of Dr Pepper Bottling Co. of Texas, later known as Dr Pepper/Seven Up Bottling Group, from 1985 to 2005, Turner went on to start his own beverage and automobile companies and has been a minority owner with the Texas Rangers and Dallas Stars.
Serving on the Baylor Board of Regents for nine years, including one as chairman, Jim headed up the selection committees that hired basketball coaches Kim Mulkey and Scott Drew. He has served on countless boards at the University, providing leadership and support for decades. Generous Baylor benefactors, Jim and his wife, Julie (BA '67, MS '68), have given to Athletics, academic programs and scholarships, and they have been recognized with the naming of the Jim and Julie Turner Riverfront Athletic Complex and more recently, the Jim Turner Family Champions Plaza at the Foster Pavilion.
