A Trailblazer Paved the Way—Now Another Bear Is Carrying the Torch

Barbara Walker (BS ’67) holds a special place in Baylor’s history as the first African-American female graduate. Her legacy extends far beyond her academic achievements, as she has tirelessly worked to support and uplift communities through her impactful career in social work. Her unwavering commitment to making a meaningful difference reflects the values Baylor cherishes and inspires hope for the future. 💚🐻
Her influence continues to shine, thanks to Michael Johnson (BBA ’99), lovingly known as "Big Mike." Inspired by Barbara’s dedication to positive change, Big Mike established the Barbara Walker Endowed Scholarship in Social Work to honor her legacy. This scholarship supports students who exemplify Barbara’s spirit of resilience, leadership, and community service—ensuring her impact lives on in future generations of Baylor Bears.
Together, Barbara and Big Mike remind us that through generosity, we can shape the hope, promise, and purpose of our future. 🌟
