60 Years Later, the Yim Legacy Continues at Baylor

Nelson Yim

What started with a brave leap from Hong Kong in 1959 has grown into a multigenerational Baylor legacy.

When Nelson Yim (MS ’63) arrived at Baylor to study chemistry, he didn’t know the language, the culture, or what to expect. But he said “yes” to an opportunity that would change his life, and the lives of his future family.

At Baylor, Nelson earned his degree, met his wife Maria (MS ’62), deepened his faith, and launched a successful career as a medicinal chemist, earning nearly 30 patents. Now, more than 60 years later, his grandsons Spencer and Charlie Yim are walking in his footsteps as Baylor students.

Spencer, a Student Regent and Honors College student, and Charlie, a business major, both say they didn’t expect to choose Baylor, but after hearing their grandpa’s story and experiencing the community for themselves, it felt like home. From faith-filled friendships to academic excellence, they’ve found a place where their hearts and minds are growing.

“Grandpa never feared being the first,” Spencer said. “He was the first in his family to go to college, the first to come to the United States, the first to experience Baylor. I hope to continue grandpa’s legacy of trailblazing for others, charting new paths, and discovering more and more of God’s plan.”

What a beautiful reminder that when one Bear steps out in faith, the Baylor Family grows for generations.
